Writing Coaching
Need a script consultant or book doctor?
Want feedback on existing work? Want to solve a problem of character or plot, melody or harmony?
Struggling to put your ideas on paper? Don’t know where to begin?
Just want a second pair of eyes?
More than anything in the world, I love solving artistic problems, and helping people say what they want to say.
While still a music student at the Manhattan School of Music, I was dramaturg for the opera Invisible Cities by Christopher Cerrone. Together, Chris and I adapted Italo Calvino’s modernist novel into a breathtaking, truly original work. After that, the opera was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
I’ve taught musical theater bookwriting for BroadwayPlus. I’ve taught musical theater songwriting at Theoryworks and at the University of Nebraska Wesleyan. In 2021, I was nominated for the Stephen Schwartz Award (an award given to “a musical theatre writer whose voice is seen as critical to the continued success of the craft, in unconditional support of their work”). As a Dramatists Guild Fellow, I was mentored by Broadway luminaries such as Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, Flying Over Sunset), Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde, Heathers, Batboy), Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on This Island), Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Frozen, In Transit) & Bobby Lopez (Frozen, The Book of Mormon , Avenue Q) and more. It is a pleasure to share my passion of shaping music-drama with other writers and continue the artistic tradition…or just get out that next draft!
BMI Steering Committee member David Spencer (the man who literally wrote the book on musical theater writing), in response to my notes: “it’s a fairly brilliant deconstruction and I hope you’re making some dough as a script consultant here and there.” That’s where you come in!
